Overview

Description of Position:

The Clinic Nurse is responsible, under the direction of the Manager Cancer Clinical Services and Director of Cancer Care for performing all duties related to the patient / family and practice side of the clinic.  The clinic nurse acts as the primary contact for a designated physician. Primary duties are related to maintaining the physician’s schedule and coordinating and facilitating safe, quality and efficient care for our patients. Establishes and maintains collaborations with medical providers and provider organizations to offer information, education and coordination of patient care. Assists in implementing identified plan of care with desired outcomes. Creates and monitors clinical quality indicators and collaborates with physicians to ensure appropriate treatment guidelines are utilized and/or developed and monitored.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Patient Care

·         Coordinates patient care by serving as the point-of-contact for patients and families throughout their radiation oncology treatment.

·         Communicates information regarding patient status and needs to providers and identified care team members including but not limited to care/case managers, social workers, nurses, dieticians, mid-levels and/or providers. Recommends support services consistent with the patient’s care needs.

·         Collaborates with:

§  support services (radiology, rehabilitation, respiratory care, pathology, palliative care, social services etc) regarding how best to meet needs and sequence care.

§  internal and community resources to provide assistance to patients/families to meet patient needs.

·         Identifies developmental, physical and psychological needs in providing age appropriate care or service. Evaluates age appropriate support systems for the patient/customer to meet their needs.

·         Performs direct patient care and implements Radiation Oncologist’s orders.

-          Weekly status checks

·         Assesses patients for special needs and plans appropriate intervention.

·         Maintains liaison with other disciplines, such as social services, nutritional support, speech therapy, physical therapy, pastoral care, and pain management and sees that their services are made available to patients in an appropriate and timely way.

·         Assist Radiation Oncologist with patient consultations including assessments, explanations of treatment side effects and radiation therapy equipment.

·         Demonstrates expertise in education of patient/family specific to radiation oncology. Collaborates with other care team members in developing, implementing and evaluating education materials for patients and their families. Routinely updates patient/family education materials. Provides referrals for appropriate support groups and services. Assists with coordination of support programs, as requested.

·         Works in collaboration with care team to develop and monitor clinical quality specific to radiation oncology. Assists with development of action plan for indicators that fall below established benchmarks.

·         Coordinates and serves as clinical support for multidisciplinary clinics. Assists physicians with procedures. Coordinates and schedules diagnostic or follow up testing as appropriate for each patient.

·         Preps charts, completes patient education for lung screening, and ensures that results are followed up on with ordering physician.

Education:

 

 

 

Graduate of accredited nursing program

 

 

BSN degree

Experience:

 

 

 

 

Comprehensive knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts related to own professional area.

 

Experience working with radiation oncology or oncology patients and families, preferred.

 

License(s)/Certification(s):

 

 

 

 

-Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

 

-Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

 

Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
