OVERVIEW 

Greater Iowa City, Inc. (Greater IC) is a network of business and community leaders working to support business, invest in strategic initiatives, and advocate for an economically resilient Johnson County. We bring together public and private partners to advance shared priorities, strengthen the regional economy, and position our community for long-term success. 

We are seeking a Communications Manager to lead the development and execution of clear, consistent, and compelling communications that elevate Greater IC’s mission, initiatives, and impact. This role plays a central part in shaping how we tell our story through strategic messaging, both written and visual, across multiple platforms. 

The Communications Manager will oversee content development, digital platforms, media relations, and brand management, ensuring all communications align with organizational priorities and resonate with key audiences. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Communications Strategy & Planning 

Under the direction of the VP of External Relations & Advocacy, lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with Greater IC’s priorities. This includes: 

  • Creating and maintaining an annual communications plan with clear goals, audiences, and metrics 

  • Aligning messaging across economic development, advocacy, workforce, and community initiatives and including all geographic areas we serve 

  • Ensuring consistency in voice, tone, visual style, and brand across all platforms 

2. Content Development & Storytelling 

Develop high-quality content that communicates Greater IC’s work and impact. This includes: 

  • Writing and editing blog posts, newsletters, reports, press releases, and marketing materials 

  • Translating complex economic and policy topics into clear, accessible messaging 

  • Highlighting regional successes, partnerships, and community impact through storytelling 

  • Supporting presentations, event scripts, and talking points for staff and leadership 

  • Designing graphics and selecting photography to complement and elevate written communication 

3. Digital Communications & Platforms 

Manage and optimize Greater IC’s digital presence. This includes: 

  • Developing and monitoring weekly email newsletters 

  • Overseeing website content, updates, and performance 

  • Managing social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) with a focus on engagement and growth 

  • Monitoring analytics to inform strategy and improve performance 

4. Media & Public Relations 

 Strengthen Greater IC’s visibility through proactive media engagement. This includes: 

  • Drafting and distributing press releases and media advisories 

  • Coordinating interviews, op-eds, and media opportunities 

  • Monitoring media coverage and identifying opportunities to elevate key messages 

5. Brand Management 

 Ensure consistent and effective use of Greater IC’s brand. This includes: 

  • Maintaining brand standards across all communications and materials 

  • Collaborating with staff and partners to ensure alignment with brand guidelines 

  • Supporting design and production of marketing collateral (digital and print) 

  • Managing external vendors for design, printing, and related services as needed 

6. Organizational Collaboration 

Work closely with internal teams to support programmatic and organizational goals. This includes: 

  • Partnering with Event Manager to promote Greater IC events and programs to drive attendance and sponsorship  

  • Supporting investor communications and engagement efforts 

  • Providing communications guidance and support across the organization 

  • Contributing to a collaborative, team-oriented work environment 

7. Data Tracking & Evaluation 

  

Measure effectiveness and continuously improve communications efforts. This includes: 

  • Tracking key performance indicators and analyzing engagement data 

  • Preparing regular reports to inform leadership and guide strategy 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field 

  • 3–5+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations 

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills 

  • Ability to translate complex topics into clear, concise messaging 

  • Experience managing digital platforms, including websites, social media, and email marketing tools 

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities 

  • Commitment to inclusive, community-focused communications 

  • Proficiency with tools such as Canva, Mailchimp, CRM systems, or similar design and email marketing platforms 

  • Experience working with business, government, or community stakeholders preferred 

  • Experience with or interest in photography and videography preferred 

  • Commitment to inclusive communications that reflect and engage the community 

Job Benefits:

This is an exempt, full-time, benefit-eligible position. Work is performed in-person at the Greater Iowa City, Inc. office in downtown Iowa City. 

Work hours are primarily Monday–Friday during standard business hours, with occasional early morning, evening, or weekend hours as needed to support events or to respond to urgent communications needs in a timely manner. A valid driver’s license and access to transportation is required. 

Compensation: $60,000–$75,000, commensurate with experience
